The Nama-gu is a ceremony to bring food to Kobo Daishi, who is still meditating and has become a Buddha. Nama-gu is performed twice a day, at 6:00 and 10:30 in the morning.
When the time comes, two monks carry a plain wooden box containing a meal and, led by a serving monk called "Vina," the ceremony begins.
First, before delivering the meal to Kobo Daishi, the Jizo statue tastes it to see if it is suitable for Kobo Daishi.
Afterwards, they cross the Gobyō Bridge and enter the Toro-do Hall, where the food is prepared and sutras are recited, concluding the ceremony.
This ritual has been performed every day for 1,250 years since Kukai attained nirvana and became Kobo Daishi, even on rainy or snowy days.
