◎Visiting ancient tombs in Fukuoka◎
①Iwatoyama Tomb
This keyhole-shaped tumulus is located in Yame City and is 135m long.
This ancient tomb is recorded in the Chikugo no Kuni Fudoki as the tomb of Tsukushi no Kimi Iwai, and to date many stone figures, stone horses, haniwa clay figures, etc. have been excavated from it, each of which has been designated as a national or prefectural cultural property.
②Tsurumiyama Tomb
This is a large keyhole-shaped tumulus built in the mid-6th century, measuring approximately 104m in length and 87.5m in mound length.
③Donanyama Burial Mounds
The Donanyama Kofun is approximately 48 meters in diameter and is said to have been built in the late 6th century.
The stone chamber is a multi-chambered horizontal-type chamber, and is attached to the back wall and is 2.5m long, 1.3m wide, and 0.5m deep. It contains a coffin carved out of tuff, and traces of vermilion paint remain inside.
④Sekijinyama Tomb
Sekijinyama Kofun, which straddles Chikugo City and Hirokawa Town, is a 110m-long keyhole-shaped tumulus built in the middle of the Kofun period (first half of the 5th century).
There is a horizontal stone chamber in the middle of the rear circular mound, and inside is a large house-shaped stone coffin. At the time, one of the characteristics of the powerful Iwai clan, who ruled the area around Chikugo, was the stone figures they made, so it was named Sekijinyama Kofun.
