Tanaka Isson devoted himself to painting despite his poverty, working in an Oshima Tsumugi factory and other places while continuing to paint Amami.
He passed away in 1977 at the age of 69. He was virtually unknown during his lifetime, but after his death, his unique style of painting became well known.
