Iki: A treasure island blessed with abundant nature and seafood

Iki is an isolated island in the Genkai Sea, about 15 km east to west, 17 km north to south, and with a total area of 139 square kilometers. It is a flat island made of hilly basalt plateaus, divided into four towns. Along with Tsushima, Iki has long been a key transportation point with the Korean Peninsula and the continent, and is described as a "great country" in the Gishiwajinden. In 1968, it was designated as Iki-Tsushima Quasi-National Park. There are more than 200 ancient tombs called Oni-no-Iwaya on the island, the largest of which is a cave-type cave made of stacked huge rocks, located in Kokubu. The highest point on the island is Takenotsuji, 213 meters above sea level, and on a clear day you can see not only the whole island, but also Hirado and Tsushima in the distance.

◆ Sakyo Nose

This is one of Iki's most scenic spots, and the view of the cliffs stretching for about 1 km is breathtaking.

There is a surviving biographical account that during the early Edo period, there was a prolonged drought, and when the onmyoji Goto Sakyo and others performed rain-making rituals at this location, heavy rain began to fall, saving the villagers.

◆はらほげ地蔵

Harahoge Jizo is enshrined in the sea at Yahataura, which is known as the "village of female divers."

満潮になると胸まで海に浸かるお地蔵さん、その姿には哀愁が漂います。

6体あるお地蔵さんは六道（地獄、餓鬼、畜生、修羅、人間、天）における苦しみや悩みから救ってくれると言われ、地元では遭難した海女さんや鯨の供養のために祀られていると伝わります。

ちなみに「はらほげ地蔵」の名前の由来は「お地蔵さんの腹が丸くえぐられているため！」とされています。

Tsushima: A bridge between Japan and the continent since ancient times

Tsushima is located about 60 km north-northwest of Iki, and is the third largest island in Japan, stretching 18 km east-west and 82 km north-south, with a total area of 709 km2. It is literally a border island, 53 km from the Korean Peninsula. Since 1245, the So clan has ruled the island for generations, and it consists of six towns: Izuhara-cho, Mitsushima-cho, and Toyotama-cho in the south, and Kamitsushima-cho, Kamiagata-cho, and Mine-cho in the north. Many historical sites are found around Izuhara-cho. The remains of Kaneishi Castle, which was the So clan's castle, are located at the foot of Mount Shimizu, and nearby is Banshoin, the So clan's family temple, where a huge stupa and the original mountain gate from the time of its founding remain. The temple also houses the memorial tablets of the Tokugawa clan's successive shoguns. Aso Bay, which divides Tsushima into north and south, has many drowned valleys and a long subsidence ria coastline with a total length of 275 km. The Manseki Strait, which connects Aso Bay and the Genkai Sea, is a canal that was excavated for military purposes in 1900, and the Manseki Bridge that spans it is a tourist attraction from which you can view the beauty of Aso Bay.
