Tanaka Isson moved to Amami Oshima in 1958 at the age of 50. He continued to paint Amami and died in 1977 at the age of 69.
He passed away. During his lifetime, Isson was virtually unknown, but after his death, his unique style of painting attracted attention.
The museum opened in 2001.
