Tanaka Isson devoted himself to painting despite living in simple poverty, and moved to Amami Oshima in 1958 at the age of 50.
He continued to paint Amami while working in an Oshima Tsumugi factory, and passed away in 1977 at the age of 69.
After his death, his unique style of painting attracted attention and he was suddenly brought into the limelight, and in 2001 his museum opened.
